 | | 1. Cairo University Specialized Pediatric Hospital (CUSPH)
| | | Latest Updates: We Owe it to Egypt and Misr El Kheir Foundations Donate Land to Cairo University
We owe it to Egypt foundation and Misr El Kheir foundations jointly contributed in purchasing a land near Cairo University Specialized Pediatric hospital (Abou El Reesh), the land was donated by We Owe it to Egypt to Cairo University in a ceremony held last week.
The newly donated land is to witness a day care annex that will be built by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as a subsidiary of the already existing Abou El Reesh hospital. This comes as part of We Owe it to Egypts vision of pooling national resources towards fundamental development in Egypts health and Education. The new joint partnership between Misr El Kheir and We Owe it to Egypt is expected to result in more development projects.
The donation was formalized by signing a protocol between Hassan Abdalla Chairman of Board of Trustees of We Owe to Egypt and Dr. Hossam Kamel Cairo University President.
The foundation continues with its commitment to supporting the overall upgrade of CUSPH
CUSPH (Abou El Reesh Hospital) is a highly specialized pediatric hospital that provides teaching services, as well as health care services for more than 1MM patients yearly.The hospital, comprises more than 400 beds, has subspecialties in surgery, cardiology, neurology genetics, nephrology, gastro-neurology and chest diseases. It also has pediatric and neonatal care units.
In its pursuit to create centers of excellence in health, We Owe it to Egypt foundation had worked to formalize and expand its support to CUSPH through providing a more comprehensive, structured and prioritized interventions and planned efforts to sustain long-term quality and functional improvements within the hospital. In this respect, the foundation is collaborating with Cairo University, Faculty of Medicine, Quality Control Office by signing a tri-partite agreement with Joint Commission International to provide the following:
- A detailed comprehensive and objective analysis of the situation at the hospital.
- An Action Plan that focuses on root-causes of gaps and suggests quick fixes with a detailed implementation plan that outlines areas of intervention.
- Recommend a range of institutional development methods that, together with upgrading of infrastructure, processes and systems, maximize impact and sustainability of the hospital (including financial sustainability).
- Develop a generic methodology and a reference guide for required set of standards that enables the foundation replicate its acquired experience and know-how to other similar health institutions.
In addition: the foundation is continuing with the following projects: - Establish an office to follow up and monitor on-going projects
- Kitchen upgrade and renovation
- Nurses training programs
- Patients support program (through Rotaract Cairo)
- Managing donations to Cardiac Catheterization and Neurosurgery Units
- Hospital cleaning and maintenance
- Training security officers
|  | | 2. National Cancer Institute (NCI)
| | | Foundation support to the NCI will help establish and maintain the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the Operating Rooms (ORs) as focused centers of excellence in NCI. Why are we supporting NCI? - International studies revealed that Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, particularly in developing countries
- There is a steady increase in the number of cancer patients by 100,000 patients every year in Egypt.
- More than 90% of patients cannot afford the medical expenses
- NCI receives more than 18,000 NEW patients yearly
Why support the ICU & ORs? - Increase the capacity of the operating rooms by 100%
- Allow their highly skilled and competent surgeons to carry an average of 400 surgeries per month
- Cut down the waiting list for cancer patients to the half.
Equipping the ICU with state-of-the-art equipment will: - Improve service delivery
- Increase the safety level of patients undergoing major surgeries, such as liver transplant and other highly specialized surgeries
- Cut down on mortality rate.
To create and maintain a Center of Excellence - Provide on-going training and skills upgrade opportunities for the ICU and the ORs medical staff
- Collaborate with NCI staff in establishing systems and processes
- Ensure maintenance.
|  | | 3. The Urology & Nephrology Centre of Mansoura University
| | | This center provides care to thousands of patients as well as education opportunities and training to hundreds of nurses and physicians from all around the world. It is an exemplary work of how commitment, dedication and entrepreneurial leadership can turn a governmental entity to a real centre of excellence. Since its establishment in 1983, it has continued to grow, with support from several donors, to serve the community in so many ways providing surgical intervention to the needy, educational and training opportunities in Egypt and worldwide. Recently it has been appointed as one of WHOs collaborating Institutes for the management of Urologic and Renal disorders. Foundation support will help the center upgrade their information technology system (software and hardware).
|  | | 4. Youth Projects
| | | | A. Tshanj - Student Development Initiative | | The foundation provided a small contribution to this relatively new student development program initiated by students from the faculty of Economics and Political Sciences calledTshanj that is change but written in the same way that is commonly pronounced by the average Egyptian. It is the first representation in Egypt created by a group of university students (from different faculties) inspired by ideas of development, positive changeand taking the lead in starting their road towards a better Egypt. Slogans we always use in our terminology in AAIB and the foundation as well. With assistance from the World Bank staff in curricula development, their seminars address important aspects of our lives, such as social change; economic changeand managerial change, and help educate and build awareness among students on how to face the challenges and explore opportunities for a more developed and a better educated participatory population. World Bank is also involved in providing training and curricula development of the seminars. | B. Collaboration with Rotaract: | | This is taking many forms - In-kind gifts to Parents - Kids - Nurses
- Organizing the purchase of the following necessary items for different stakeholders:
- Lockers (for parents belongings)
- Mothers uniform
- Bed sheets and pillow covers for patients
- Clothes hangers for patients/mothers
- Maintenance of food trolleys and beds.
- Social/Cultural and Environmental Awareness Raising of parents through various means:
- Nadine Abdel Hamid (parent of a child who died from cancer) speaker for parents
- WHO speaker for parents
- WHO speaker for nurses
